U10A team v Stroud

After a tight draw against Stroud A team last week, it was great to have a return fixture at theirs. Ben scored immediately from the start and then they replied with a try of their own straight away. I feared it would be a repeat of the poor tackling that resulted in an alternating of tries that we saw last week. We were slow to wake up and struggled to get into the game with us being 4-3 down at the end of play.

We then played their B team and we began to tackle more and run straight. Tries came from Clayton, Samuel, Jack , Thomas and Ben with Stroud scoring two in response.

The third period saw us take on their A team again. The next 15 minutes was billed as our Everest. Going into it, we were one try down but I had no doubt that if we each played at our potential, with no passengers and half hearted tackles, we would win. This was the moment of truth, time to stand up and be counted. Jack responded and powered over, not once, not twice but three times to extend our lead before Barns added two more (one the length of the pitch charge) with only one try for Stroud. Ben was everywhere and relished my challenge of being the best player on the pitch in both attack and defence. It was great to see such a dominant period of play and I was thoroughly proud of the boys, as they were of themselves at the end of that quarter coming away 8-5 victors.

Finally, we finished with the second half against Stroud B team. With some of our big guns on the sideline, it was good to see others grow in confidence and get on the scoresheet with tries from Clayton, Samuel, Jack and Thomas.

Today was a big learning process where the boys understood that in rugby, everyone has to play their part. By each boy raising their own individual performance a little bit, it had the impact of raising the team’s performance considerably. That is what we need from the off.

There were several performances of note today. Barns was outstanding, particularly in defence and sets a standard for his team to follow. Sebbie reminds me of Faf de Klerk, with his darting runs and flowing locks! Samuel has massively improved since the start of the season and is now a threatening ball carrier. Jack scampered over for plenty of tries, particularly in the biggest moments of the match. That said, my man of the match performance goes to Ben. After being on the receiving end of a bit of an earful from me, he responded brilliantly and I have scrawled on my match notes ‘Ben K - immense’. That says it all. Well done!
