The girls needed all their energy today, with 3 back-to-back matches. First up, Sandroyd Cs. This was end-to-end play, with both teams winning possession in equal measure. Sandroyd perhaps had the edge with accurate passing, with FSM's girls showing the greater power. The girls had a learn-as-you-play short corner tutorial, successfully defending these twice and, in a textbook delivery from Hen to Vera, scoring the only goal of the match in their attacking short corner! Girl of the Game: Vera
The second game was against Sandroyd's B team, who were a step above their comrades. Play was pacey and FSM were a little reticent in the face of the tougher opposition. That said, Sophie was solid at the back, clearing the ball away from danger more times than not. Eliza was under a lot of pressure, occasionally left on her own, and the opposition were able to net 4 goals despite her best efforts. Up the pitch, Mariana played a great game in mid-field, feeding the ball to the wings where she could and getting stuck into tackles. Girl of the Game: Eliza
Finally, when energy was visibly drooping, the girls suddenly found extra reserves to put on their best display of hockey yet, against Clayesmore. Clayesmore had netted a quick goal, but FSM were determined to equalise. Regina was in a class of her own here, with strong tackles and great spacing for running dribbles up the pitch, supported by Vera and Mariana. With Elodie well placed for a pass in the D, we were unlucky not to get that last touch for the goal. Sophie and Hen, in defence, were again under some pressure, but fought like tigresses protecting their young! The whole team raised their game. While an equaliser was sadly not to be, the girls are to be congratulated for keeping the opposition from scoring again, and should be proud of the effort they threw into this game. Well done!
